As I've seen on the Internet and looking at these beautiful fish, they are really something.   They say that Convicts are very easy to keep and even easier than GUPPIES!  I decided to try them out and about now, there are no problems so far and I'm beginning to enjoy what I have here.  This is a diary like memo of progress with my Convicts!

This is the kind of Convict that I have and am now breeding.
Zebra Convict   I have three of these.  There are 2 females and 1 large male.  This is my first time ever experimenting with these fish and I'm hoping that they'll turn out as I wish.

My First Batch of Convict Fry - Tank started July 8, 2000 (CONVICTS ONLY)

  1. 7/11/2000 11 p.m. Central time - The female Convict laid eggs and the male is also helping out.

No fishes are placed in the same tank as my Convict pairs.  Fry should hatch in about 72 hours from the time when the eggs are laid.

  2. 7/13/2000 - The eggs are beginning to show signs of development as they show dark spots inside.   There are some at the bottom of the tank which does show a little development, but I'm not sure if they'll survive.

  3. 7/14/2000   9:00 p.m. Central time - The majority of the eggs have hatched and I can see wrigglers now.  Only about 6 ot 7 more eggs that did not hatch and one or two that are infertile.  Mommy and Daddy are helping out picking up and chewing on fry to clean them up and place them back in cave-like ornament.

  4. 7/16/2000 8:42 a.m. - All fry doing just fine.  Mommy is always watching them.  All eggs have hatched.  Having only one that did not hatch that can be seen.  Still wrigglers!

  5. 7/19/2000 - All fry are now "FREE SWIMMING".  Mommy and Daddy are watching over them and always protecting and not letting them wander off far off the site.  Feeding them crushed flake foods mixed with bloodworms.

  6. 7/26/2000 - Removed the male.  Female is taking care of all fry and they're doing very good.   Growing at a steady pace.  Feeding crushed goldfish flakes.

  7. 8/30/2000 - It's about over a month now and the fry are growing and changing rapidly.  Fed them frozen brine shrimp and they're tearing it up!
